May and Mother's Day
May is popularly devoted to Mary; statues dedicated to her are showered with bouquets and crowns of flowers. The second Sunday of May, Mother's day often takes on Marian nuances. There was an annual Mothering Sunday celebrated in England on the fourth Sunday of Lent from the 17th to the 19th century. Our Mother's day became a regular observance through the efforts of Anna M. Jarvis who held church services in Grafton, West Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in honor of her own mother. In 1910 the governor of Oklahoma issued the first Mother's Day proclamation and in the following year all the other states did also. Finally in 1913 mother's day was established on the second Sunday in May.
